The Mayor of Freetown, Yvonne Aki-Sawyer was honoured to deliver a speech at the start of the premiere of the play “Okozid” in Stuttgart, Germany.

The play was a court-room drama set in the year 2034 at the International Court of Justice where Global South countries brought charges against industrial countries for their neglect of climate protection regulations.

Her speech emphasized the fact that Freetown, like many other cities in the Global South is already experiencing the impact of abnormal weather patterns. She explained how climate change is significantly affecting millions of people in Africa. She reiterated the call for action to match rhetoric and for global GHG emissions to be reduced now.

As she has worked very hard to fight against climate change in Sierra Leone, Her Worship left the shores of Freetown on Thursday 23rd September, 2021 for Germany in response to an invitation to deliver a speech on climate change. She will be back in Freetown in the next couple of days.
