Mayor of Freetown Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr has announced the completion of a feasibility study for a cable car system in the city and its presentation to Vice President Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh.
The study, funded by the C40 Cities Finance Facility, was conducted over a period of 24 months and involved collaboration with German International Cooperation (GIZ) and the Freetown City Council (FCC). The project received additional funding from Germany, France, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
The proposed cable car system aims to transform Freetown, improve the quality of life for citizens, and promote sustainable urban mobility. Mayor Aki-Sawyerr has emphasized the project’s potential to alleviate traffic congestion and provide a unique and scenic transportation option.
“This project is not just about reducing traffic; it’s about reimagining how we move around our city,” Mayor Aki-Sawyerr said in 2022. “The cable car system will not only alleviate congestion but also provide a unique and scenic travel experience for residents and visitors alike.”
The presentation of the feasibility study marks a significant milestone in the development of the cable car project.
