The government of Sierra leone through the ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources has announced the successful end of the one-month closed season for artisanal fishing, which began on February 1st.

Fishing activities are now allowed to resume, effective from midnight on 28th February, 2025.

The closure was put in place to help restore the country’s fish stock and protect marine ecosystems. This move was in line with Section 10 (2b) of the Fisheries and Aquaculture Act, 2018, which gives the Ministry the responsibility to manage and conserve fish resources.

The Ministry thanked the artisanal fishing communities for their cooperation throughout the closure period. “We appreciate the communities for following the rules,” the Ministry said. It also acknowledged the support of other stakeholders who helped make the closure period successful.

As fishing resumes, the Ministry continues to urge fishers to avoid harmful fishing practices, especially the use of beach seines (draw chains), which can cause damage to the environment. The Ministry will remain vigilant, monitoring the waters to ensure compliance with fishing regulations.

The Ministry will continue its efforts to protect the country’s fisheries and marine resources, ensuring sustainable fishing practices are followed through ongoing monitoring and enforcement.
