Sierra Leone’s Minister of Information and Civic Education, Chernor Bah, denounced recent attacks against AYV journalist Amadu Lamrana Bah during a press conference on Tuesday, April 9th, 2024.
Bah has reportedly faced online harassment and threats from supporters of the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) for his social media posts questioning the government’s actions. The harassment included attacks on his academic qualifications and accusations of bias towards the opposition party.
Minister Bah expressed his solidarity with Bah, stating, “I strongly condemn attacks on the Fourth Estate and I sympathize with Amadu Lamrana Bah of AYV who faced attacks for performing his duties.”
The Fourth Estate is a term used to describe the press as a vital check on government power. By condemning the attacks, Minister Bah is highlighting the importance of a free and independent press in Sierra Leone.
However, the Minister also emphasized the importance of “factual reporting and professionalism among journalists.” This suggests that while he defends journalists’ right to ask questions, he also expects them to adhere to journalistic ethics and accuracy.
This is a correct minister.
Thank you, Mr. Bah, for such a swift action. The attack on Journalists in Sierra Leone by members of the public is growing each passing day.
The government has a role to play in this, if it is to be put to an end. If this continues and the government also keeps being passive about it, the MEDIA will go on sit down protest thereby leaving the public in the dark in terms of COMMUNICATION.
Minister Bah needs to handle this particular issue beyond a mere condemnation. Stringent actions should be taken against those involved.
