Sierra Leone BBC reporter Umaru Fofona has extended heartfelt congratulations to Asmaa James following her approval by Parliament to serve as Sierra Leone’s Deputy Ambassador to Belgium.

He revealed that he was nearly moved to tears by the tributes paid to James in Parliament, reflecting on her impressive growth over the past two decadesfrom a rookie radio reporter to a leading media figure and advocate for girls’ rights.

Describing James as one of the top five female journalists in Sierra Leone’s history, Fofona highlighted her remarkable influence on the country’s media landscape and her resilience in the face of societal challenges. He acknowledged the harsh criticism she has faced, but noted her unwavering strength and ability to overcome obstacles.

Looking ahead, Fofona expressed confidence in James’s capabilities and wished her success in her new role, describing it as a significant challenge. He also made a notable promise:

As you take on this role at the EU while Sierra Leone is a Member of the UN Security Council, remember that even the sky will not be the limit if you excel.

And should I decide to run for President of Sierra Leone, as many have suggested, you can be assured of a more senior position in my government
