The State House Director of Communications, Myk Berewa, has defended President Julius Maada Bio’s record on education while acknowledging systemic challenges affecting the sector.
Speaking in response to criticism over the government’s education reforms, Berewa highlighted issues such as difficulties in computing the Continuous Assessment Scores Capturing System (CASS) for students preparing for public examinations.
He argued that such challenges should not be interpreted as evidence of failure but rather as obstacles being addressed within ongoing reforms.
Berewa said it was unfair to equate the exemption of some students from sitting public exams with a collapse in the education system, noting that the government continues to prioritize education as a central pillar of its development agenda.
His remarks came as he provided clarification on President Bio’s recent State Opening of Parliament address, in which the President cited key achievements made during his seven years in office, including investments aimed at improving access to quality education.
Berewa emphasized that while the administration acknowledges the need for further improvements, the progress made so far demonstrates the government’s commitment to strengthening the education sector despite logistical and technical hurdles.
