President Julius Maada Bio has appointed Dr. Williette James to the esteemed position of Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC). The appointment, made in accordance with Section 3 (2) of the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Corporation Act, 2010, awaits approval by Parliament.
In the official appointment letter addressed to Dr. James, President Bio expressed his confidence in her ability to effectively lead the Board of Trustees. The letter highlighted the importance of Dr. James’ role in guiding the SLBC towards fulfilling its mandate of providing quality broadcasting services to the people of Sierra Leone.
Upon receipt of the appointment letter, Dr. James was advised to liaise with the Clerk of Parliament to facilitate a meeting with the Committee on Appointments and the Public Service of Parliament for consideration of her appointment.
Once approved by Parliament, Dr. James will receive further details regarding the terms and conditions of her appointment. Her leadership as Chairman of the Board of Trustees is expected to contribute significantly to the growth and development of the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Corporation, ensuring that it continues to serve the public interest effectively.
Dr. Williette James, a Sierra Leonean journalist, lecturer, and Gender advocate, holds multiple degrees from Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone, including a Ph.D. in Communication and Media Studies. With over 23 years of experience in journalism and gender advocacy, she has lectured at FBC’s Mass Communication Department, rising to Assistant Dean, before joining NP (SL) Limited as Communication Manager. Dr. James has made history as the first female President of the Academic Staff Association of Fourah Bay College, the first President of the Academic Staff Association of all three constituent colleges of the University of Sierra Leone, and the inaugural President of the national Union of Academic Staff Associations in Sierra Leone. Currently, she chairs the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists Gender Panel, serves on the International Federation of Journalists Gender Council, and is the Founder of Women Leaders Initiative, mentoring young female university students.
She really deserves it. Parliament should approve it. I believe that with her as the head, there will be positive changes. One thing I’m very certain of, is that she has God by her side. One thing she always says is that for her God is the reason for her success. With how hardworking and God-fearing she is, she is the best for the position. Plus, having a woman in high positions, serves as an inspiration to us the young ladies to work hard and break gender bias in our society.
