President Julius Maada Bio has approved a 25% salary increase for personnel of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF), effective April 2026, in a move aimed at boosting morale and strengthening national security.

The announcement was made during his keynote address at the Armed Forces Day commemoration held at Wilberforce Barracks.

President Bio described the increment as more than just a pay rise, calling it ”a recognition of the military’s sacrifice, an investment in their morale, and a reaffirmation of the trust and confidence the nation places in its Armed Forces.”

He directed the Chief of Defence Staff and the Director General of the Ministry of Defence to ensure the full and timely implementation of the new salary structure.

In addition to the salary announcement, the President officially launched the National Defense Policy and Strategy, outlining it as a comprehensive roadmap designed to build a secure, resilient, and confident nation.

The policy is expected to guide military reforms, strengthen operational capacity, and enhance collaboration in addressing emerging security challenges.

The development has been widely viewed as a significant step toward reinforcing the welfare of service personnel and consolidating national defense reforms.
