President Julius Maada Bio has directed the Ministry of Employment, Labour, and Social Security to begin negotiations for a new national minimum wage.
The announcement was made during the National Labour Conference at the Miata Conference Center.
President Bio emphasized the necessity of ensuring workers can “live with dignity,” stating that the current wage requires revision. He also acknowledged the significant role of the informal sector in Sierra Leone’s economy and pledged to accelerate efforts to integrate it into the formal sector.
“We are prioritizing the extension of national social security coverage to include informal sector workers, thereby offering millions of Sierra Leoneans access to critical social safety nets,” President Bio stated.
The call for a new minimum wage comes amid widespread concerns that the current rate of Le800 is insufficient to meet basic living costs.
Minister of Employment, Labour, and Social Security, Mohamed Rahman Swaray, has publicly acknowledged the inadequacy of the current wage, describing it as “too low” in a recent AYV Television interview. 1
Why did he not call for an increase in the national minimum wage in his early first term of governance? He doesn’t have legitimacy as President and he knows he will be passing the responsibility to Dr Samura MW Kamara after looting the country’s resources. May Allah handle this idiot and inflict the heaviest punishment against him in hell. Maada Bio is not only an electoral thief, he’s also a financial thief. They have the military only to terrorise their citizens but not against their Guinean counterparts who will teach them the lesson of their lives.
Oooh sierra Leone , when would our Successive Governments and their predecessors be serious about our welfare? And when will the leakages to our strained economy be closed ? Where is the Wages and Compensation Commission ? What are they doing since it’s establishment ? The Gambia in march 2022 regularized the flaws and inadequacies in wages and salaries of all employees across the country based on qualifications and merits . All these are distracting of attentions and raising of false hopes that would yield no dividend. Imagine it’s only in sierra Leone that you can see a mediocare politician with a TC and yet still earms more than Degree and Masters holders and yet you see ministers making Noise all over the country about the welfare of their citizens whiled the educated are perishing in pain. But posterity will surely Judge these politicians and their progeny.
