Sierra Leone’s President, Julius Maada Bio has on the 31st January,2024 officially opened the final High-Level Seminar of the 5th Legislature of the ECOWAS Parliament hosted in Freetown, Sierra Leone. 

The Seminar was structured under the theme “Illegal Mining and Its Consequences in the ECOWAS Sub-Region”.

In is speech, President Bio maintained that, it is timely, as the scourge of illegal mining has negatively impacted peace, stability, security, development, governance, the rule of law, the environment, and the economy in the sub-region.

He charged the Honourable Members of the ECOWAS Parliament to continue to work together towards advancing strong legal and regulatory frameworks for combating the scourge.

I extended appreciation to the ECOWAS Parliament for its steadfast role in strengthening the democratic process and good governance in the sub-region in general and in Sierra Leone in particular” he noted.

He further thanked the 5th Legislature under the able leadership of the Speaker, the Right Honourable Sidie Mohamed Tunis, for the outstanding accomplishments which remain unprecedented and unmatched in the history of the ECOWAS Parliament, adding that, Sierra Leone is proud of the Honourable Speaker’s strides and commends him for being a worthy ambassador.

I received the 5th Legislature’s Outstanding Commitment Award for inspirational leadership in the ECOWAS Community with immense pride and a renewed vision to support the Community’s integration and development objectives as articulated in the ECOWAS Vision 2050.

While wishing the Parliamentarians a successful seminar, I urged them to lend their voice to the advancement of the sub-region, even as the 5th Legislature of the ECOWAS Parliament comes to an end in less than two months” he maintained.

This is also viewed as a positive milestone to a collaborative development and role of Sierra Leone towards it’s bilateral relationships with other African countries.
