Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio has publicly shared his sorrow over the death of former British High Commissioner, Peter Penfold, through a social media post.

President Bio articulated his personal loss by saying, “It is with profound sadness that I learn of the passing today of a dear friend and brother, Peter Penfold CMG OBE, Former High Commissioner of the #UnitedKingdom to Sierra Leone (1997-2000).”

Speaking on behalf of the nation, President Bio conveyed, “On behalf of the Government and the good people of Sierra Leone, I extend my deepest condolence to the family, friends and #British Government.”

Reflecting on their shared history, President Bio highlighted Mr. Penfold’s remarkable dedication towards reinforcing democratic values, peace, and harmony. “Peter Penfold was an exceptional ally to #SierraLeone, an impeccable diplomat who relentlessly endeavored to champion democracy, peace, and unity in our nation. His role was pivotal in fortifying the Sierra Leone-UK ties and furthering our country’s progress. His bravery during our nation’s most challenging times, especially in orchestrating the evacuation of numerous Sierra Leoneans during the tumultuous days of war, is commendable.”

In his closing remarks, the President emphasized the country’s deep gratitude for Mr. Penfold’s commitment and wished for his eternal tranquility. “Sierra Leoneans will always hold in high regard Peter Penfold’s dedication to upholding democracy during his tenure. Rest in eternal peace, our cherished brother and friend KOMRABAI (Paramount Chief) Peter Penfold,” concluded President Bio.
