President Julius Maada Bio was recently seen at the Bo School Thanksgiving Celebration event in Bo, arriving in a brand-new 2025 Yangwang U8, a luxury SUV valued at around USD 150,000 (AUD 250,000).

The car, made by the Chinese automaker BYD Auto under its upscale Yangwang brand, drew attention due to its high-end features and price tag.

The SUV is equipped with advanced technology, including a 360-degree “tank turn,” the ability to float on water, and a hybrid electric system that extends its driving range. These features make it a standout vehicle in terms of performance and luxury.

It is believed that the vehicle was a gift from Gilbert Zhao, the CEO of Leone Rock Metal Group, a company involved in the mining sector in Sierra Leone. Zhao left the country shortly after the gift was presented, raising questions about the relationship between business and politics in the country.

People are reacting to Bio’s luxury SUV, especially given the contrast with the struggles of everyday Sierra Leoneans. As the president enjoys such wealth, many are asking how this aligns with the difficult realities faced by ordinary citizens.
