In the wake of a confirmed fourth MPOX case in Sierra Leone, Bo District authorities have intensified efforts to contain the virus and prevent further spread. The District Medical Officer (DMO), Dr. Amara Steven Ngegbai, provided an update on the situation during a high-level meeting with Resident Minister South, Chief John Abu, in Bo City on January 17,2025.
The most recent case involves a 7-year-old boy from Valunia Chiefdom, who tested positive for MPOX after receiving treatment at the Lion Heart Medical Center in Tonkolili District. In response, 17 individuals from the boy’s community are under self-quarantine and being closely monitored for the disease’s 21-day incubation period.
“These individuals are adhering to strict quarantine measures, and our health team is vigilantly observing them for any signs of the disease,” Dr. Ngegbai stated.
Strengthening Healthcare Infrastructure
To bolster the district’s preparedness, a seven-bed isolation unit has been established at the Bo Government Hospital. The facility is staffed with trained medical professionals equipped to manage suspected cases of MPOX effectively.
Dr. Ngegbai noted that while MPOX is generally less severe than Ebola or COVID-19, the health team is not taking any chances. “We are fully committed to safeguarding lives and preventing further transmission. Our isolation unit is well-equipped, and our staff has undergone specialized training to handle cases effectively,” he said.
Educating the Public
Intensive public awareness campaigns have been launched to educate residents on MPOX symptoms, transmission, and preventive measures. Messages are being disseminated through radio and television, with a particular focus on Valunia Chiefdom and neighboring communities.
Dr. Ngegbai called on media outlets to extend these educational efforts to remote areas, emphasizing that public knowledge is a powerful tool in fighting the outbreak. “We rely on the media to ensure every resident of Bo District is informed about this disease and how to protect themselves,” he said.
Resource Constraints
Despite the progress, Dr. Ngegbai highlighted the need for additional medical supplies. “While we have some essential drugs, more resources would greatly enhance our capacity to manage this outbreak effectively,” he added.
Government Commitment
Resident Minister South, Chief John Abu, praised the swift actions taken by the health team and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to public health.
“The protection of every citizen’s life is a top priority for this administration. We will continue to support all efforts to contain the MPOX outbreak and prevent its spread,” Chief Abu assured.
He urged the public to strictly adhere to health guidelines and promptly report any suspected cases. The minister also emphasized the importance of accurate and timely information dissemination, particularly during public health emergencies.
Collaborative Action
Chief Abu appealed to traditional leaders, community stakeholders, and the general public to work closely with health authorities to combat the outbreak. He underscored the necessity of collective action, stating, “The fight against MPOX requires unity and cooperation. Together, we can overcome this challenge.”
United Against MPOX
With strengthened healthcare infrastructure, robust public education campaigns, and collaboration among stakeholders, Bo District is demonstrating its readiness to tackle the MPOX outbreak. Authorities remain vigilant and resolute in their efforts to protect lives and maintain public health.
The district’s united response underscores its determination to overcome this challenge and safeguard the well-being of its residents.
