President Julius Maada Bio is preparing for a significant shake-up of ministerial appointments, departments, and agencies, aiming to address widespread incompetence and underperformance within his government.

Reports from Spy Newspaper indicate that this overhaul will extend to diplomatic placements, including press attachés.

Sources within the corridors of power suggest that the impending reshuffle will be extensive, with senior ministers, including close allies of the President, expected to be replaced. Despite the President’s expectations, it’s reported that a staggering 90% of appointees, especially ministers, have fallen short in their roles, lacking the expertise necessary for effective governance.

Among the prominent figures in the government, such as former Chief Minister David Francis and former Bank Governor Kelfala Kallon, although highly educated and exposed, their lack of expertise in key governance positions has been evident. Additionally, heads of departments and agencies have been accused of undermining efforts towards good governance, with allegations of rampant corruption overshadowing their operations.

Despite receiving substantial government resources annually, many of these appointees have failed to demonstrate tangible development or positively impact the economy. The Auditor General’s reports since the Bio-led SLPP regime came into power in 2018 have highlighted widespread corruption and financial malpractice across government entities, contributing to economic instability and hardship.

The anticipated changes are expected to bring fresh perspectives, increased efficiency, and new expertise to the affected departments and agencies. With the looming reshuffle, there is speculation about whether the President will opt for experienced individuals to replace the inexperienced appointees or continue with his youthful government approach. The outcome of these changes remains to be seen as Sierra Leone looks towards addressing its economic challenges and governance issues.
