Central University has received significant funding from the European Union (EU) to establish a Master’s program in Agroecology.
This initiative aims to address key concerns related to climate change, environmental degradation, and food security.
The program will offer students hands-on experience in sustainable farming methods, biodiversity conservation, and research-driven solutions, equipping them to shape agricultural policies and contribute to long-term development in Sierra Leone and beyond.
In addition to its Agroecology program, the university is tackling urban waste management challenges through the WARM Project, an EU Erasmus+ initiative. The project seeks to develop an academic curriculum on waste management while also providing training in sustainable disposal methods for students and faculty.
By collaborating with governments and policymakers, the initiative promotes composting, recycling, and environmental education while developing skilled professionals to address waste management issues in Sierra Leone’s urban areas.
These programs reflect Central University’s long-standing commitment to academic excellence, research innovation, and policy engagement. The EU funding enhances faculty expertise, fosters international collaboration, and ensures the university’s programs align with global sustainability goals.
Looking ahead, Central University plans to expand its EU-funded initiatives into renewable energy, climate adaptation, and digital education. With successes such as the Agroecology Master’s program and the WARM Project, the institution continues to lead in sustainable education and national development.
Through these initiatives, Central University strengthens its position as a recognized academic and policy-making institution, playing a crucial role in advancing sustainability efforts in Sierra Leone and globally.
