Sierra Leone’s Minister of Information and Civic Education, Chernor Bah, has emerged as a strong advocate for global cooperation in tackling misinformation during the 2026 International Strategic Communication Summit (Stratcom 2026) held in Istanbul.
Delivering a keynote address at the summit, Minister Bah described misinformation as a global threat that goes beyond national borders. He said the spread of false information undermines public trust, destabilises societies, and affects economies worldwide.
“Misinformation is not just a national challenge, but a global threat,” Bah stated, emphasising the need for coordinated international efforts to address the growing problem.

Drawing on Sierra Leone’s experience, he pointed to media literacy, citizen engagement, and transparent governance as key tools in building resilience against false narratives.
According to him, empowering citizens with accurate information and strengthening trust in public institutions are critical steps in countering misinformation.
In separate engagements with international broadcasters, including TRT, AfroTurk TV, and China Global Television Network, Minister Bah outlined measures being implemented in Sierra Leone.
These include partnerships with local media organisations, nationwide digital literacy campaigns, and regulatory actions aimed at reducing harmful online content.

He said these efforts demonstrate that all countries, regardless of size, have a role to play in shaping a more responsible and informed global information environment.
Beyond misinformation, the minister also addressed the broader economic effects of global conflicts. He cited rising fuel prices and increasing import costs linked to tensions involving Israel, United States, and Iran, noting that such developments continue to impact countries like Sierra Leone.
He stressed that responsible communication and an informed public are essential in helping nations respond effectively to these external pressures.
The summit was organised by Presidency of the Republic of Türkiye Directorate of Communications and brought together ministers, communication experts, and technology innovators from across the world to discuss challenges and strategies in global communication.
Minister Bah’s participation at Stratcom 2026 highlights Sierra Leone’s growing engagement in international discussions on information integrity and digital governance, reinforcing its contribution to global efforts aimed at safeguarding truth in the digital age.
