In an effort to enhance tertiary education in Sierra Leone, Chief Minister David Moinina Sengeh has engaged with a delegation from the Academic Staff Association (ASA) of Milton Margai Technical University at State House to discuss critical issues affecting the institution.
During the meeting, ASA President Mr. Ishmael B. Kebbay highlighted the challenges faced by the university, noting that the payment of fees is a major issue for many students. He acknowledged the government’s efforts in fulfilling 63.37% of the various allowances owed to the institution while confirming that internal allowances have been paid up to date as of February 2025.
Mr. Kebbay reiterated the need for strategic partnerships to enhance institutional development. He further appealed for intervention to allow affected students who have not paid their fees to sit for their exams while arrangements are made for outstanding payments.
Chief Minister Sengeh assured the ASA of government support and sought clarification on the issue of severance allowances, inquiring whether all staff had received their payments or if the funds were being held for a lump-sum disbursement.
“We must work together as a team to achieve success. I strongly encourage you to cooperate with those in leadership positions so that we can build a more just and equitable society,” Dr. Sengeh stated.
The ASA leadership also updated the Chief Minister on ongoing recruitment efforts, noting that they had recently held a meeting with the Ministry of Technology and Higher Education regarding the recruitment process.
