The Government of Sierra Leone, through the Ministry of Health, has partnered with the People’s Republic of China to establish a Nursing Training Center aimed at improving the country’s nursing standards and strengthening its healthcare delivery system.
The center, inaugurated on July 3 at the China-Sierra Leone Friendship Hospital in Freetown, is an initiative led by the 27th Chinese Medical Team to Sierra Leone. The facility is expected to serve as a structured platform for training and professional development of nurses across the national health system.
The ceremony brought together officials from the Sierra Leone Ministry of Health, including senior leadership such as the Permanent Secretary and Chief Medical Officer, alongside representatives of the Chinese Embassy. The event also included members of the Chinese medical team and staff of the Friendship Hospital.
Speaking at the inauguration, Wang Peng, Counselor in charge of Commercial and Economic Cooperation at the Chinese Embassy in Sierra Leone, described the center as a practical step toward strengthening health cooperation between Sierra Leone and China. He noted that the initiative aligns with broader efforts under China-Africa people-to-people exchange programmes and emphasizes skills transfer to support sustainable healthcare development.
From the Sierra Leone health sector perspective, officials welcomed the establishment of the training center, stating that it will help address gaps in nursing capacity by introducing standardized training, modern clinical practices, and improved service delivery systems within hospitals and health facilities nationwide.
Health authorities further highlighted that the center is expected to enhance the quality of patient care by equipping nurses with updated technical skills and management knowledge, while also supporting long-term reforms in the country’s health workforce development strategy.
The Nursing Training Center is designed to function as a model for continuous professional training, with the aim of strengthening Sierra Leone’s healthcare system and ensuring more resilient and efficient health services across the country.
