In a recent press release, the Campaign for Human Rights and Development International (CHRDI) highlighted concerns over the restriction of citizens’ rights in Sierra Leone following the failed coup attempt in November 2023.

While acknowledging the severity of the security crisis, CHRDI urged the government to ensure any emergency measures taken are proportionate, necessary, and non-discriminatory.

The CHRDI emphasized that while national security is crucial, it shouldn’t come at the cost of citizens’ rights. The organization urged authorities to uphold constitutional provisions safeguarding freedom of movement, speech, and assembly. Additionally, CHRDI urged citizens to refrain from violence and encouraged the government to investigate the coup attempt and unlawful killings.

They recommended establishing an independent inquiry into the country’s security sector to prevent such incidents in the future. Emphasizing the importance of the rule of law and protection of human rights in a democratic society, CHRDI stressed the necessity of free and open debate amidst political tensions while ensuring accountability for those involved in any unlawful activities.

The release underlined the significance of citizens’ participation in democratic processes and the agreement upon rules and laws governing their governance.
