A group identifying themselves as “Concerned Citizens” has raised alarm over the alleged abandonment of the Western Rural school bus and the non-payment of drivers’ salaries for seven months by the Western Rural District Council.

In a statement released on February 25th, 2024, the group expressed deep concern over the reported negligence, citing fuel shortages and unpaid wages as the primary reasons for the bus’s inactivity.

“My conscience will not serve me well if I refuse to draw the attention of citizens and the central government about the negligence of the Western Rural school bus that has been abandoned by the Western Rural Council,” the statement read.

The group highlighted the importance of education as a key flagship initiative of President Bio’s government, noting that over 20% of the national budget is allocated to the education sector. They argued that the abandonment of the school bus undermines the government’s commitment to providing accessible education.

“We cannot sit and see the facilities our school-going pupils are using for school being abandoned and left unnoticed because of fuel,” the statement continued.

The “Concerned Citizens” urged relevant stakeholders to take immediate action to address the fuel and salary issues, emphasizing the financial strain faced by parents in the current economic climate. They believe that a functioning school bus system would alleviate some of the transportation burdens on students and their families.

“As we all know, the economy is tough and the constraints parents undergo to send their children to school are hard. Helping with the transport system will help to cushion the effects on students,” the group stated.

The group called for a collective effort to support President Bio’s education agenda, urging stakeholders to prioritize the needs of students and work together to resolve the issue. They emphasized the importance of unity over self-praise in achieving positive change.

The Western Rural District Council has yet to respond to the allegations.
