Violent clashes between members of the Koranko and Limba ethnic groups in Lenkekoro, northern Sierra Leone, have resulted in the deaths of two individuals and serious injuries to four others.
The Local Unit Commander, Superintendent Ibrahim Barrie, confirmed it with a Popular Journalist, Umaru Fofanah that the fatalities were caused by machete wounds, and the injured are currently receiving medical treatment.
The violence reportedly stemmed from a long-standing land dispute in Lenkekoro, a town that lies on the border of two chiefdoms: Wara Wara Yagala, predominantly inhabited by the Limba people, and Diang, which is mainly home to the Koranko. The two chiefdoms are separated by a single street, intensifying the tensions between the communities.
Superintendent Barrie stated that police had been monitoring the rising ethnic tensions and had previously advised both communities to pursue peaceful resolutions through legal channels. However, the situation escalated in the early hours of today, Saturday, 17th May, 2025, leading to deadly confrontations.
In response to the violence, security forces have been deployed to the area to restore calm and ensure the safety of residents.
