Residents of the St. John community are raising urgent concerns over the worsening condition of the Old Railway Line Bridge, located just past their neighborhood along the main route to the city center.
The bridge, which is believed to be over 60 years old, has developed visible cracks and structural damage, prompting fears that it could pose serious dangers to pedestrians, traders, students, and drivers who rely on it daily. Locals describe the structure as unsafe and unstable, warning that continued use without repairs could result in accidents or even a collapse.

For decades, the bridge has served as a crucial link for people traveling to schools, markets, and workplaces. However, its lack of maintenance and upgrades over the years has left it weakened and increasingly hazardous. Residents argue that the situation highlights broader concerns about public infrastructure management in Freetown and across Sierra Leone.
Community members are calling on the Sierra Leone Roads Authority (SLRA) and other responsible government agencies to take immediate action to repair the bridge and address its structural issues. They also stress the need for a regular maintenance plan to ensure long-term safety and prevent future disasters.

“The bridge is a vital route for our daily activities, and we fear for our lives every time we cross it,” a local resident said. “We urge the authorities to act quickly before a tragedy occurs.”

The deteriorating Old Railway Line Bridge adds to growing worries over infrastructure safety in the capital, with previous incidents highlighting the dangers posed by neglected roads and bridges.
Until repairs are carried out, residents continue to view the bridge as a serious hazard and are pressing officials to prioritize their safety.
