Tensions surrounding the unresolved publication of disaggregated results for the June 24, 2023, multi-tier elections have reached a critical point. Concern Sierra Leoneans, a civic group advocating for electoral transparency, has officially requested police security for a planned peaceful demonstration scheduled for December 10, 2024.
In a formal letter addressed to the Sierra Leone Police (SLP), the group called for adequate security measures at 38 assembly points identified from Lumley to Waterloo, including the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL) headquarters in Tower Hill, Freetown. The group stated that the demonstration is a response to ECSL’s failure to release polling station-level results despite repeated demands.
“We expect the Sierra Leone Police to exhibit professionalism, respect, and dignity as our people exercise their constitutional right to assemble peacefully, as guaranteed under Section 14(1) of the Sierra Leone Constitution,” the letter read.
The Concern Sierra Leoneans expressed fears over potential police misconduct during the demonstration, referencing incidents of violence in past protests. They urged the SLP to uphold their reputation as “The Force for Good” by refraining from using excessive force or engaging in aggressive tactics such as firing live rounds or tear gas on unarmed protesters.
The group’s primary demand is for the ECSL to publish detailed election results disaggregated at the polling station level by December 9, 2024. Failing that, thousands of citizens are expected to rally to demand transparency in the electoral process.
The ECSL has not publicly responded to the group’s demands or provided clarity on the requested election data. The commission has been under mounting pressure from civil society organizations and opposition groups to enhance accountability and rebuild public trust following allegations of irregularities in the 2023 elections.
On the other hand, the SLP have invited them to a meeting today at the Police Headquarter for further deliberations, while the public waits in anticipation.
