In a shocking turn of events, the historic Cotton Tree, a cherished symbol of Sierra Leone’s capital, Freetown, has collapsed during a powerful downpour.

Witnesses at the scene describe the scene as chaotic, with one eyewitness recounting how the tree fell directly onto a taxi, causing significant damage.

Eyewitnesses report that the incident occurred this night, as heavy rainfall engulfed the city.

The Cotton Tree, located at the heart of Freetown, has long been regarded as a cultural and historical landmark, revered by both locals and visitors alike. Its fall has sent shockwaves through the country, evoking a mix of nostalgia, sadness, and concern for the affected taxi driver.

“I was standing nearby when the Cotton Tree suddenly gave way. It was a surreal sight. I saw one taxi parked beneath it, and my heart sank,” said one witness.

The fomer Mayor of Freetown, Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr also expressed her sadness at the incident.

“I feel a deep sense of loss which I know is shared by many Freetonians. The Cotton Tree was the centre of our city in so many ways and a part of all of our experiences and history….” she lamented on a social media post.
