The Ministry of Defence and the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (MoD/RSLAF) have announced the retirement and discharge of several officers following approvals by the Defence Council during its meeting on Monday, November 18, 2024.

The decision, made in accordance with Section 169 (1) of the Constitution of Sierra Leone Act No. 6 of 1991 and paragraphs 26 and 27 (a & b) of the Army Orders No. 1 of 1965, affects officers in three distinct categories:

Administrative Discharge: Fifty-three (53) officers, ranging from Major General to Lieutenant, have been retired as part of administrative measures.

Compulsory Discharge (Absent Without Leave): Eleven (11) officers, from Major to Lieutenant, have been discharged due to prolonged absenteeism without leave (AWOL).

Compulsory Discharge (Misconduct): Six (6) officers, from Lieutenant Colonel to Lieutenant, have been discharged for misconduct.

Lump Sum Payments Approved for Administrative Retirees

In a gesture of goodwill, the Defence Council has approved a lump sum payment equivalent to one year’s salary for the 53 officers in the Administrative Discharge category.

This payment is in addition to their gratuity and other entitlements, demonstrating the Council’s commitment to ensuring a fair process.

Names to Be Published in National Gazette

The discharges take immediate effect, and the names of the affected officers will be published in the National Gazette for public reference.

The MoD/RSLAF reaffirm their commitment to maintaining discipline and adherence to professional standards within the Armed Forces while ensuring that due processes are followed in matters of retirement and discharge.
