The Minister of Health, Dr Austin Demby, has made a compelling case for a unified data management system that positions Africa’s healthcare transformation as a strategic continent-wide agenda.

Dr Demby made this statement while speaking during the formal launch of the Health Intelligence Initiative and the Health Intelligence Centre for Africa (HICA) in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa.

This initiative, which seeks to collectively improve on healthcare data gathering, management and use, places health intelligence at the centre of Africa’s healthcare reform, emphasising the need for political commitment that drives results.

The health ministers stressed the need for countries to manage real-time insight into what is happening on the ground through the use of reliable data.

During the discourse, maternal mortality was highlighted as a major entry point for reform given that it is an issue that transcends all aspects of healthcare delivery. Sierra Leone played a leading role as one of five African countries on the continent championing this effort including Rwanda, Ethiopia and Nigeria, among others.
