Sierra Leone is set to embark on a transformative infrastructure project as four districts have been selected to benefit from the EU-funded “Opportunity Salone” feeder road project.

The pilot phase of the initiative will be implemented in the districts of Kenema, Bo, Bombali, and Port Loko, aiming to improve transportation infrastructure and enhance economic opportunities for the local population.

In a collaborative effort, the International Labour Organization (ILO) and its partners have engaged with the public-private partnership unit to ensure sustainable feeder road maintenance through a public-private community partnership. This approach seeks to empower local communities and establish a long-term maintenance plan for the newly developed feeder roads.

The Opportunity Salone programme has a comprehensive set of objectives, with a particular focus on enhancing agricultural value chains and entrepreneurship development.

By creating a conducive business environment, the project aims to stimulate job creation and foster economic growth, specifically targeting the youth and women.

Furthermore, the programme seeks to increase feeder road maintenance, ensuring smooth transportation and improved market access, while supporting the development of robust value chains.

The implementation of the Opportunity Salone project marks a significant step forward in Sierra Leone’s infrastructure development efforts. The investment in feeder roads is expected to have a multiplier effect on the local economy, fostering entrepreneurship, and improving livelihoods. As the pilot phase commences in the selected districts, stakeholders eagerly anticipate the positive impact this initiative will have on job creation, market access, and the overall economic well-being of the region.
