Popular activist and head of the Native Consortium, Edmond Abu, has issued a public notice urging passengers of Waka Fine buses not to pay the recently increased fare of Le 12, which he described as “illegal and criminal.”
Abu, in a statement, said his legal team has been engaged and will soon take court action against the Ministry of Transport, the Sierra Leone Public Transport Authority (SLPTA), Metro, and the ticketing company responsible for the fare hike.
He called on passengers to continue paying the previous fare of Le 8, stressing that the Le 12 fare is ultra vires and unlawful for a private company to impose. “The fare increase is only within the authority of the Ministry of Transport,” Abu stated.
The statement comes after Metro Transport announced the increase in Waka Fine bus fares, citing the recent government decision to raise fuel prices as justification.
