The Environment Protection Agency Sierra Leone (EPA-SL) has announced a week-long series of public events and community engagements to mark World Environment Day 2026, operating under this year’s central theme of “Climate Action.”

The agency’s planned activities aim to raise public awareness and encourage collective steps toward building a greener and safer environment across the country.

The week’s events will officially launch on Wednesday, June 5. Opening day activities will focus on youth engagement, featuring an environmental excursion and a poetry competition designed specifically for local School Nature Clubs.

On Thursday, June 6, the EPA-SL will host a public “Green Run” through the capital. The run is scheduled to begin at 7:30 AM, with participants starting at the historic Cotton Tree on Siaka Stevens Street and concluding the route at the Kallon Car Park in Aberdeen.

Following the city-center events, the agency will shift its focus to coastal environmental challenges. On June 8 and 9, the EPA-SL will conduct targeted community engagements in the coastal towns of Lakka and Sussex. Agency officials intend to use these sessions to address severe local environmental threats, with a specific focus on combating plastic pollution, mitigating coastal degradation, and halting illegal sand mining operations in the area.

The EPA-SL is calling on the public to join the week’s events to help foster a more sustainable future for Sierra Leone.
