Sierra Leone has solidified its position as the third-largest supplier of organic cocoa to the European Union (EU) market, according to the European Union Ambassador to Sierra Leone, Jacek Jankowski.

Speaking exclusively to AYV, Ambassador Jankowski highlighted Sierra Leone’s growing importance in EU trade relations, particularly in the agricultural sector, where organic cocoa continues to serve as a key export commodity linking the country to European markets.

The ambassador noted that Sierra Leone plays a significant role in meeting the European Union’s demand for organic cocoa and described the commodity as an important pillar of economic cooperation between the EU and Sierra Leone.

Despite this achievement, Ambassador Jankowski pointed out that Sierra Leone remains a relatively small economy with limited purchasing power. He stressed the importance of attracting greater European investment to support economic expansion, job creation, and sustainable development.

“We need to see more European Union partnerships investing in the country,” he stated, emphasizing the need for stronger private-sector engagement and increased investment opportunities.

The ambassador further disclosed that ongoing discussions between Sierra Leone and the European Union have also focused on enhancing the country’s capacity to secure and manage its ports more effectively. According to him, strengthening port protection and control mechanisms forms part of wider efforts aimed at improving trade security, facilitating commerce, and deepening economic cooperation between the two partners.

The remarks underscore the European Union’s continued interest in supporting Sierra Leone’s economic development while expanding mutually beneficial trade relations. As the country seeks to diversify its economy and attract foreign investment, its growing prominence in the organic cocoa market is expected to strengthen its position within international trade networks.
