The European Union (EU) has provided €200,000 in humanitarian aid to support flood victims in Sierra Leone, targeting the most affected communities.
Announced on October 14, 2024, the aid will help 1,800 households, about 12,600 people, through the Sierra Leone Red Cross.
The assistance focuses on multipurpose cash transfers for essential needs like food, water, sanitation, and health services, along with disaster mitigation efforts.
The floods, worsened by heavy rains and rivers overflowing from Guinea, have affected over 23,500 people, destroying 167 buildings, including critical infrastructure, and submerging 7,324 hectares of farmland, impacting food security for over 1,500 farmers.
The EU’s contribution is part of its support through the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) Disaster Response Emergency Fund (DREF), aimed at smaller disasters that need immediate relief but don’t prompt international appeals.
This aid emphasizes the EU’s commitment to disaster preparedness, climate resilience, and humanitarian support, ensuring ongoing recovery efforts in Sierra Leone.
