Sierra Leone’s First Lady, Dr. Fatima Maada Bio, on Thursday, April 23, 2026, attended and honored the 10th anniversary of Izelia, a Sierra Leonean-born, British-raised fashion label, at an event that celebrated the rich cultural heritage of Sierra Leone.
The evening highlighted the impressive contributions of Izelia to promoting African heritage and culture through creative fashion.
In her remarks, Dr. Bio expressed her admiration for the event, noting that it was a beautiful celebration of Sierra Leone’s traditions and artistic identity.

“The display of our vibrant Ankara, gara, and country cloth, expertly woven into contemporary fashionable designs, was truly inspiring,” she said. “It was an evening where heritage met elegance, complemented by the sound of traditional Sierra Leonean music that kept the atmosphere warm and joyful.”
Dr. Bio emphasized the significance of Sierra Leone’s cultural heritage, pointing out that the country possesses one of the richest traditions in Africa. “What we need now are more platforms to share it with the world, and yesterday’s showcase was exactly that-a seamless blend of heritage and elegance that I deeply enjoyed,” she added.

The First Lady also expressed her hope for the establishment of a College of Arts and Culture by Izelia. She believes that such an institution could provide young minds with the opportunity to learn how to transform local resources into excellence, whether through art, music, fashion, or design.
“I hope to see Izelia establish a College of Arts and Culture, where young minds can learn to transform our local resources into excellence,” Dr. Bio said. “This will help further promote our culture and empower the next generation of creatives.”
In a gesture of gratitude, Dr. Bio extended her heartfelt thanks to her sister, Madam Isata, for the tribute to their culture and heritage. She also expressed appreciation to the British Council for providing the platform for the event and to everyone who attended and contributed to its success.

The anniversary event, which was held at the British Council, successfully showcased Sierra Leone’s unique cultural assets and highlighted Izelia’s role in sharing them with a global audience. Dr. Bio’s presence at the event underscored the significance of supporting local talent and ensuring that Sierra Leone’s cultural legacy continues to thrive.
The celebration left attendees inspired by the seamless fusion of tradition and contemporary fashion, reaffirming the importance of nurturing Sierra Leone’s creative industries.
