The First Lady of Sierra Leone, Dr. Fatima Maada Bio, received a Mayoral Declaration from the City of Carrollton, Maryland, honoring her as the Champion of Women and Girls.
The accolade was presented by Mayor Phelicia E. Nembhard during the JMBNA Dinner, coinciding with the 249th anniversary of the United States Declaration of Independence.
The honor notably celebrates Dr. Bio’s tireless advocacy for women’s and girls’ rights, spotlighting her influential “Hands Off Our Girls” campaign. The initiative has evolved into a registered Non-Governmental Organization dedicated to combating gender-based violence and promoting education and rights for girls.

The declaration also recognized Dr. Bio’s key contributions to the humanities, where she has reportedly worked to amplify marginalized voices and address social justice issues. Her efforts have created vital platforms for advancing women in leadership, education, and economic development.
Fatima Bio’s commitment to global collaboration was emphasized, reflecting her partnerships with international development agencies and civil society organizations to tackle gender disparity and drive policy changes across Africa.

As the elected President of the Organization of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD), Dr. Bio has notably championed continent-wide strategies aimed at improving health, education, and economic outcomes for women and children.
