First Lady of the Republic of Sierra Leone, Fatima Bio, has pledged to continue her advocacy to ensuring that the lives of Sierra Leoneans are well protected.
Fatima Bio made this commitment during her speech on the international human rights day commemoration on the 10th December 2023, where she emphasized the importance of freedom, equality, and justice in creating a just and equitable society. She said that freedom is the foundation upon which we build a society that values diversity, fosters inclusivity, and empowers individuals to express themselves without fear or prejudice.
In her speech, She said, “I am honored to address you on this significant occasion of International Human Rights Day.” She added that the theme, ‘Freedom, Equality, and Justice for All’ resonates deeply with the core values that underpin our commitment to building a society that embraces the principles of human rights.”
also reflected on the progress that the country has made in promoting human rights and highlighted the challenges that still lie ahead. She noted that the theme serves as a reminder of the universal rights that every individual is entitled to, regardless of gender, race, religion, or social status.
Bio emphasized the importance of freedom, equality, and justice in creating a just and equitable society. She said that freedom is the foundation upon which we build a society that values diversity, fosters inclusivity, and empowers individuals to express themselves without fear or prejudice.
On equality, Bio said that it is the cornerstone of a just society. She added that as First Lady, she is dedicated to promoting gender equality and ensuring that every citizen has equal opportunities to thrive and contribute to the nation’s development.
Bio also spoke about justice, saying that it is the third pillar of this year’s theme. She said that a just society ensures fair treatment, access to legal recourse, and protection from discrimination.
Bio called on all Sierra Leoneans to renew their commitment to upholding human rights as a collective responsibility. She also pledged to continue advocating for the well-being and rights of all citizens.
Bio said that her focus is on empowering women, promoting education, and fostering an inclusive environment. She said that together, Sierra Leone can build a country where every individual’s rights are respected, protected, and celebrated.
