Sierra Leone’s First Lady, Dr. Fatima Maada Bio, has publicly endorsed the Mayor of Freetown City, Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr, following the mayor’s declaration of interest to contest for the flagbearer position of the All People’s Congress (APC) ahead of the 2028 general elections.

The endorsement was contained in a congratulatory statement issued by Dr. Bio, in which she described Mayor Aki-Sawyerr’s decision as “a courageous and inspiring step.” The First Lady said the declaration reflects a commitment to inclusive leadership and has broader significance for women’s participation in politics.

Congratulations to you Madam Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr, your decision to declare for the flag-bearer/presidency is a courageous and inspiring step,” Dr. Bio stated. “It reflects your belief in inclusive leadership. You are opening doors for women and girls everywhere, and I wish you strength, wisdom, and success on this historic journey.

The message signed “With pride and solidarity, Fatima Maada Bio,” marks a notable public show of support for the Freetown mayor’s presidential ambitions within the opposition APC. Mayor Aki-Sawyerr, who has served as mayor since 2018, recently declared her intention to seek the party’s flagbearer position for the 2028 elections.

While Bio did not comment on party politics beyond her message of encouragement, her statement focused strongly on women’s leadership and empowerment, themes she has consistently promoted during her tenure as First Lady.
