Tensions are rising at Fourah Bay College following reports that the banned group known as the Aura Aura Auradicals is preparing to unveil new members, in direct defiance of a campus-wide suspension on all club activities.
The move has alarmed observers who fear the group’s continued disregard for university regulations and police guidance could trigger swift disciplinary measures.
The indefinite ban on student club activities was imposed by college authorities on May 2, 2026, after two consecutive days of violent clashes on campus. The disturbances, which occurred on April 30 and May 1, left several people injured and property destroyed.
Assistant Inspector General Sylvester M.N. Koroma, Regional Police Commander for Freetown West, met with college administrators on May 2 and launched a full investigation. AIG Koroma assured authorities of the police’s commitment to holding perpetrators accountable and urged the administration to provide credible information on student club leaders suspected of involvement in the violence.
Deputy Vice Chancellor Professor Baio described the unrest as an attack on the institution’s authority, while Deputy Registrar Ibrahim Bah said the incidents had significantly tarnished the college’s image.
The recent violence is the latest episode in a long history of campus clashes typically fueled by rivalry between two major fraternities known as White and Black. The groups frequently clash over politics and dominance, disrupting academic activities and destroying property.
Following the emergency meeting, the administration reinforced the suspension order, which covers all gatherings, processions, chanting, and organised group activities under student clubs. The campus remains under full security coverage by the Western Area Regional Command of the Sierra Leone Police. Authorities have warned that any violation will result in firm disciplinary action.
Despite the ban, reports now indicate the Aura Aura Auradicals are pressing ahead with plans to induct new members. No official statement has been issued by college authorities or the police regarding the group’s reported intentions.
