The Freetown City Council (FCC) has on Tuesday 7th February 20023 presented their climate action plan to a visiting World Bank mission team, focusing on Climate Action.

The Mayor of Freetown, Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr hosted the team led by World Bank Manager, Abdu Muwonge.

Mayor Aki-Sawyerr stated that it was a great opportunity to share the FCC climate Action Plan that was launched three weeks ago.

The climate Action Plan was geared towards climate adaption and mitigation interventions ranging from the plantation of one million trees to stabilize slopes, protect water sources, and reduce temperatures, to introducing a mass transit cable car system to reduce traffic congestion and carbon emission, the climate action plan provides a sustainable medium-term pathway to the city resilience.

The Mayor made mention of the market shade cover project, annual flood mitigation activities, the development of fertilizer and cooking briquettes as byproducts of the faecal sludge treatment plant, strengthening of community Disaster Management Committees within venerable communities, and several other FCC interventions were highlighted during the discussion.

Mayor Aki-Sawyerr concluded by saying everyone has a role to play in the fight against climate change and she is pleased to share some actions individuals will be able to take.

In their response, the World Bank Country Manager and mission team members assured the Mayor of the World Bank’s commitment to facilitating the provision of much-needed climate action finance and to continuing to work with FCC as they implement the Climate Action Plan.
