A fire outbreak at the Lumley Market on Sunday afternoon left traders and shop owners reeling as high-voltage electrical surges reportedly triggered the blaze.
The Sierra Leone Fire Force has yet to officially confirm the cause.
Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr, accompanied by Councilor Unisa Kamara, members of the Freetown City Council (FCC) Metropolitan Police, and Lumley Traders Chairlady Mammy Morlai Kamara, visited the site to assess the damage and offer support to victims.
“It was heartbreaking to see the devastation caused by yet another fire in our city,” Mayor Aki-Sawyerr said. Many traders have lost everything, with their goods reduced to ashes in a matter of hours.
Victims and witnesses reported spending the day battling the flames alongside the Fire Force personnel. Food and water were provided to those affected as immediate relief.
Mayor Aki-Sawyerr called for a thorough investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire and highlighted the need for preventive measures to address the recurring incidents.
The Sierra Leone Fire Force continues its assessment of the incident. Meanwhile, traders and residents are left grappling with the aftermath of yet another market tragedy.
