Sierra Leone’s Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Hon. Princess Dugba, and Deputy, Madam Haja Isata Abdulai-Kamara, recently hosted a high-level meeting with the Chinese Consular and their team in Freetown.

This diplomatic gathering aimed to strengthen bilateral relations and forge closer partnerships in the realm of marine resources and fisheries.

The discussions delved into several crucial areas of mutual interest, including the much-anticipated Black Johnson Fish Harbour project. Spearheaded by the Chinese government, this ambitious initiative promises to transform Sierra Leone’s fisheries landscape. Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring the project’s successful implementation and maximizing its positive impact.

Beyond the Black Johnson project, the minister and the delegation actively engaged in a fruitful exchange of insights and best practices in aquaculture. Recognizing the vital role of sustainable and responsible practices in this sector, they explored collaborative efforts to further advance Sierra Leone’s aquaculture potential. This bodes well for the future of responsible fisheries management and sustainable seafood production in the region.

The discussions also touched upon plans to modernize the Ministry’s radio room. Upgrading these crucial communication and monitoring facilities will significantly enhance surveillance efforts, particularly in combatting illegal activities at sea. By leveraging modern technology and infrastructure, Sierra Leone and China aim to fortify maritime security within the country’s territorial waters.

This high-level engagement highlights the growing synergy between Sierra Leone and China in the fisheries sector. By pooling resources, expertise, and a shared commitment to sustainable practices, both nations stand to unlock exciting advancements in marine resource management, contributing to a thriving fisheries industry and ultimately benefiting local communities.
