The ongoing trial surrounding the attempted coup on November 26th, 2023, saw Inspector Mohamed Jusufrim of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) present new forensic evidence.
Taking the stand as the 30th prosecution witness, Jusufrim detailed phone communications allegedly linking key figures in the alleged plot. Appearing before Justice Komba Kamanda at High Court No. 1 in Freetown, the Inspector recounted his analysis of phones belonging to Ramatu Kamanda Conteh (4th accused) and Alimatu Bangura (5th accused).
Awoko reports that Jusu testified to uncovering messages between Amadu Koita Makalo (1st accused) and Conteh on her phone. He explained using the USSD code *98# to trace the number, confirming it belonged to Makalo. Screenshots of these messages were presented, with Conteh claiming she received no response. However, Jusufrim noted the messages were subsequently missing from her phone.
The investigation then turned to Bangura’s phone. Jusufrim utilized the International Mobile Equipment Identification (IMEI) number and the *98# code to identify a specific iPhone 11. He verified its authenticity and proceeded with a general analysis of the phone’s gallery.
Crucially, Jusufrim identified unsaved contact information containing conversations between Makalo and Bangura. Screenshots of these exchanges were also presented, with Jusufrim revealing the presence of romantic messages dating from December 2nd and 3rd, 2023.
Following Jusufrim’s testimony, Justice Kamanda ordered all twelve defendants back into custody. The trial resumes on Monday, May 20th, 2024.
