Heavy gunfire has been reported by residents in Grafton, Jui, and Hastings Community in the Eastern part of Freetown.

Sierra Leone Minister of Information, Chernor Bah says the gunshots were a result of security forces pushing back assailants who attempted to seize the Military barracks on Sunday morning.

“The security forces have pushed back the assailants to the outskirts of the city,” stated Bah. “They are currently being engaged in the Jui area.”

The attacks, which began early this morning, targeted major detention centers, including the Pademba Road Prisons. In the interest of protecting civilian lives, including those of prisoners, the security forces were forced to make a tactical retreat, resulting in the temporary overrun of the prisons. Some prisoners were abducted by the assailants, while others were released.

The government has reiterated that the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC) is not on fire and not under siege. The Director-General of SLBC is safe and continuing to carry out his duties.

“The security forces are making progress in the operation to defeat and apprehend those responsible for today’s attacks,” Minister Bah assured the public. “The curfew remains in effect. Stay indoors. The government remains in control and on top of the situation.”

The government has urged all citizens to remain calm and cooperate with the security forces.
