The Mayoral Candidate for the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP), Mohamed Gento Kamara has reaffirmed his statement made at Basharia Mosque on Kissy Road via SLRSA.
“I will not apologize. I am sincere with what I said,” he said.
“We are not being recognized [and] I’m making my case for my Muslim people to support me but I will choose a Christian running mate,” Gento affirmed in an interview with 98.1 on Monday.
He added that he has respect for Christianity and referenced that he said that in his statement at the said mosque.
Responding to the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ), the mayoral candidate said that SLAJ is a hypocrite because they failed to call out both Dr. Samura Kamara and Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr of the All People’s Congress (APC) when they made tribal statements some time ago.
Gento added that SLAJ should have contacted him to enquire about the rationale behind his statement at the mosque. He said the Journalist Body failed to investigate but only responded based on a video that was circulated widely on social media.
“The mayoral position should not be for a single tribe,” he said. He furthered that people are used to “skewing things” for political gains but that he will not subscribe to such.
On Monday afternoon, the Inter-Religious Council of Sierra Leone (IRCSL) also criticized Gento and prodded him to make a public apology for his statement which they believe to be bigotry and hateful.
The SLPP candidate will face the incumbent APC Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr in the 24 June mayoral election for Sierra Leone’s capital, Freetown.

I strongly stand with Gento and I will give him every single support he needs for his ambition to become a Mayor in Free Town.
A good leader is one that is willing to learn from mistakes, respect authorities, and one that would not put a shield against criticism.
This is a very bad beginning for Gento.
The man seems to be a useless politician we are Muslims but we never vote for u even if ssy rubbish more than this u are on the wrong side bear this in mind people have already made up their mind foolish politician
Religious bigotry is unacceptable. He made a mistake and he refused to apologize. He has no business in politics.
Gento have No message to cajole people to vote for his sinking ship , been desperate he is trying to use religion to maneuver people to his fail team (slpp). This show how Incompetent he is , trying to trade peace for power , may God judge him according to his motive . He seems to be the worse in this sinking (ship) slpp.😂
Guys really needs to be careful of what you’re saying we are in a public forum, all the comments that has to do insult for both the two politicians is not good can’t we have respect for leaders, but sometimes some of you don’t even have respect for your parents that’s why you can’t have respect for your leaders, you can comment and make your point not to insult any other leaders, but some of you politics has over come your brain you don’t longer have a sense of reasoning trust me, the problem with country is that people don’t normally respect and see the truth or either understand the truth just because of politics, I’m are shame of you guys, that’s why Sierra Leone is always behind, because we value politics more than what will benefit us in the country, and all the youths, old and young people are not thinking positive or have positive thoughts for Sierra Leone, so how can we see betterment when most of us the don’t seem to see or understand the truth and think positive, most of you guys are in your house with no food to eat, no good house to sleep since when you’re born and to crown it’s all you came from a very poor Family instead of for you to sit and think of ways and means to make money and change the story of your family, you’re born fort a purpose and that purpose is to work heard and take rewrite the story of your Family
We can only progress in Sierra Leone if we change our thinking because changing your thinking will change your life, be worn don’t follow politics focus on your future I’m to those who have future ahead of them because some have destroy their own
