Authorities have provided an official update following a deadly fire incident in Grafton Community, confirming that four people lost their lives and that assessments are ongoing to guide relief and recovery efforts.

According to a statement from the Council Administration, the fire occurred on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, prompting an immediate response under the directive of Chairman Kasho J. Holland Cole. A high-level delegation was subsequently dispatched to the affected area to conduct a spot assessment.

The delegation, led by the Deputy Chairman, included the Chief Administrator, the Development Planning Officer, the Climate Change and Disaster Management Officer, and two resident councillors. The visit was carried out in line with the Council’s mandate to promptly assess emergency situations and coordinate appropriate responses.

Officials said the purpose of the visit was to gather first-hand information about the incident, evaluate the extent of damage and loss, engage directly with affected families and community members, and identify urgent needs as well as possible areas for intervention.

During the engagement, the delegation expressed sympathy to the property owner and bereaved family members following what it described as the tragic loss of four lives. The Council also reaffirmed its solidarity with residents of Grafton during what it termed a difficult period.

Preliminary findings from the assessment, the statement noted, will inform decisions by the Council and its partners regarding immediate relief support and longer-term interventions. Authorities added that consultations are ongoing to mobilize assistance and ensure that those affected receive the necessary support.

The Council Administration further emphasized its commitment to strengthening disaster response systems, improving community resilience, and working closely with partners to help prevent similar incidents in the future.

Officials said additional updates will be communicated as response efforts progress.
