The Ministry of Transport and Aviation has announced new fare rates for ferry services operating between Freetown and Lungi, following last week’s increase in the pump price of fuel.
In a press release issued Tuesday, the ministry confirmed that it has collaborated with ferry operators to agree on a 9.4 percent fare adjustment, effective Tuesday, March 17, 2026.
New Passenger Fares
Under the new structure, passenger ticket prices have increased as follows:
First Class tickets: from NLe 54.2 to NLe 59.2
Second Class tickets: from NLe 29.3 to NLe 32.1
Government of Sierra Leone forces personnel: from NLe 10.8 to NLe 11.8
Students in uniform will continue to travel for free.
Vehicle and Cargo Rates
The fare adjustment also applies to vehicles and cargo transported by ferry:
Motorcycles: from NLe 55.4 to NLe 60.6
Cars: from NLe 196.1 to NLe 214.6
Vans and Jeeps: from NLe 235.8 to NLe 258
Tricycles (Kekeh): from NLe 160.2 to NLe 175.2
Bicycles: from NLe 30.1 to NLe 32.9
Coaches below 25 seats: from NLe 248.4 to NLe 271.7
Coaches between 25 and 40 seats: from NLe 313 to NLe 342.4
Coaches with 42 seats: from NLe 404.8 to NLe 442.9
Coaches above 42 seats: from NLe 626.2 to NLe 685
Buses (e.g., TATA): from NLe 1,027.6 to NLe 1,124.2
Rates for trucks (empty or full), trailers (20ft and 40ft), and luggage remain negotiable.
The new fare structure was jointly signed by Deputy Minister of Transport and Aviation Hon. Rex Bhonapha, along with representatives from the major ferry operating companies, including Mr. Sallah of Afrimpex Navigation (SL) Ltd., Alusine Daramy of M.V. Mahera, and Francis Jamal Matin of MV Bai Bureh.
The government advised the public that the new fares take effect immediately and urged compliance from all ferry operators and passengers.
