The Ministry of Finance has disbursed millions of dollars to Karpowership within the last 72 hours to subsidize electricity supply, raising concerns over the sustainability of such expenditures.
According to seasoned football administrator and political commentator Rodney Michael, the payment is an unbudgeted subsidy that poses negative economic implications.
He stressed that the current model is unsustainable and called for a redesign of electricity tariffs alongside improved revenue collection to prevent excessive financial strain on the government.
This development comes as Freetown faces a severe blackout, with the electricity supplier resorting to power shedding due to supply constraints. The prolonged outages have disrupted businesses, hospitals, and households, sparking growing frustration among residents.
The government has yet to make an official statement on the payments or outline long-term solutions to the recurring energy crisis. However, experts argue that without structural reforms in electricity pricing and revenue collection, Sierra Leone’s power supply challenges will persist.
