The government of Sierra Leone has launched the SOGREA Initiative, a major project aimed at improving energy access in rural areas, nationwide.
Supported by the European Union and implemented by UNOPS and Sustainable Energy for All (SE4All), the initiative represents a EUR 34 million investment focused on electrifying thousands of underserved households and businesses.
Dr. Kandeh Kolleh Yumkella, Chairman of the Presidential Initiative on Climate Change, Renewable Energy and Food Security, announced the launch, stating, “Today marks a transformative moment in Sierra Leone’s development journey.”
Dr. Yumkella further described the initiative as a catalyst for rural transformation, green industrialization, and inclusive economic growth.
The SOGREA Initiative is expected to create jobs, improve education and healthcare outcomes, and support the government’s goal of eradicating poverty. President Julius Maada Bio emphasized his vision to ensure that “no Sierra Leonean is left in the dark” in the near future.
Dr. Yumkella asserted the initiative’s role in expanding clean energy access and building resilient communities. He also noted its commitment to sustainability, which includes measures for managing solar waste and testing renewable technologies.
He expressed gratitude to the European Union, UNOPS, Sustainable Energy for All, and the Universal Energy Facility (UEF) for their support and expertise in advancing Sierra Leone’s green energy future.
