The Sierra Leone government has released an update following a high-level discussion with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on the country’s political situation after the failed coup attempt on November 26th.

The delegation, led by Presidents Macky Sall of Senegal and Nana Akufo-Addo of Ghana, along with Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission, and Ambassador Dr. Abdel-Fatau Musah, the ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace & Security, met with President Julius Maada Bio to discuss the current political climate and determine how ECOWAS can further support the government in maintaining peace and security.

The ECOWAS delegation strongly condemned the attempted coup, praising the bravery of the security forces and commending President Bio’s swift response in addressing the situation and upholding peace, democracy, and constitutional order. They reaffirmed their unwavering support for the democratically elected government and reiterated their zero tolerance for unconstitutional changes of power.

President Bio expressed his deep gratitude for the visit and show of solidarity from ECOWAS and the regional leaders. He assured the delegation of his government’s commitment to upholding due process and welcomed the pledge of security assistance from ECOWAS.

This visit follows the decision made at the 64th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government on December 10th, where a security mission to Sierra Leone was approved. The ECOWAS delegation is currently in the country to gather more information about the current situation and determine the scope and specifics of the mission.

ECOWAS’s involvement in this situation underlines its commitment to promoting peace and stability in the West African region. The deployment of a security mission will further demonstrate the regional body’s solidarity with the democratically elected government of Sierra Leone and its efforts to prevent any future attempts at undermining democratic institutions.

The Sierra Leone government is expected to provide further updates on the deployment of the ECOWAS security mission and the ongoing investigations into the failed coup attempt. The nation hopes for a peaceful resolution to the situation and a continued strengthening of democratic values in the country.
