A heavy downpour has left two school children dead in Upper Jalloh Terrace in Wellington, Freetown. The rainstorm forced the collapse of a massive sidebank which resulted in the death of the two children.
The two young girls have been identified as Aminata and Isata.
According to local reports, the torrential downpour over Freetown compromised the structural integrity of the elevated sidebank wall, triggering a sudden mud and debris collapse that swept into the residential compound. Neighbours and emergency responders rushed to the scene to conduct rescue efforts, but unfortunately, the young girls could not be saved.
The sudden deaths of Aminata and Isata have sent shockwaves through the neighbourhood.
This tragic incident comes amid heightened fears regarding safety regulations and infrastructural integrity across Freetown during the heavy rainy season. Local authorities have frequently warned residents living near steep slopes, waterways, and vulnerable embankments to exercise extreme caution as heavy downpours continue to saturate the terrain.
Earlier last week, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) issued a flood alert for Port Loko, a district very close to the capital Freetown.
Heavy downpours are common in Sierra Leone between July and August, and authorities have warned the local population to prioritise their safety.
