The Ministry of Information and Civic Education has commenced planning activities for the upcoming National Remembrance Day, scheduled for January 18, following a declaration and directive by President Dr. Julius Maada Bio.

The President recently declared January 18 as National Remembrance Day and mandated the Ministry of Information and Civic Education to lead the coordination and commemoration of the occasion. The day is intended to honour victims of past national tragedies and promote reflection, unity, and national healing.

According to ministry officials, planning discussions began earlier this week, with key stakeholders engaging in strategic deliberations to ensure a meaningful and inclusive observance. The Ministry said the commemoration would reflect national values, collective remembrance, and respect for the sacrifices made by Sierra Leoneans.

Officials noted that the initiative forms part of the government’s broader efforts to strengthen civic education, preserve national memory, and foster social cohesion. By institutionalising National Remembrance Day, the government aims to encourage reflection on the country’s history while reinforcing commitment to peace and national development.

The Ministry also reaffirmed its readiness to implement the President’s directive, assuring the public that preparations are underway to ensure a successful commemoration. Activities planned for the day are expected to involve government institutions, civil society organisations, religious bodies, youth groups, and the wider public.

As January 18 approaches, the Ministry has called on citizens to participate actively in the observance, highlighting remembrance as a key element of national unity and reconciliation.
