The International Moral Guarantors overseeing the implementation of the “Agreement for National Unity” between the Government of Sierra Leone and the All Peoples Congress (APC) Party have concluded their second assessment mission to the country.

The mission, which took place from October 14 to 18, 2024, aimed to monitor the progress of the agreement signed a year ago, on October 18, 2023.

The mission was co-led by H.E. Leonardo Santos Simão, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS), and H.E. Fatoumata Jallow-Tambajang, former Vice President of The Gambia. It also included Justice (Rtd) Amraphael Mbogholi Msagha, the Commonwealth Secretary-General’s Envoy to Sierra Leone, as well as technical experts from ECOWAS and UNOWAS.

During their visit, the team met with key stakeholders, including President Julius Maada Bio, APC leadership, other political parties, and representatives from the judiciary, security forces, the Elections Commission, civil society organizations, and the diplomatic community.

In a press release, the mission expressed satisfaction with the progress made in implementing the National Unity Agreement. However, it urged the government and the APC to address outstanding issues and expedite the recommendations of the Tripartite Committee through regular consultations and inclusive decision-making processes.

The mission called on all political actors and citizens to continue fostering trust and promoting dialogue to ensure sustainable peace and stability in Sierra Leone.
